Friday the 5th was a long drive to the Camuy Caverns, which turned out to be a popular field trip site for summer camps. There were probably 200 youth recognizable only because they were wearing matching t-shirts (50 in red, 50 in green, 50 in white...). We have been thinking all along that many of the sites in Puerto Rico were the inspiration for Disneyland rides, and this only proved our suspicion. We hopped on a Disney-esque trolley to drive through the rain forest wearing green hard hats, throwing our arms up in the air while we screamed to the other trolleys full of kiddos.
The caves were similar to underground river structures I've seen, but HUGE and better lit. I found the different stalactite and stalagmite formations to be fascinating; layers, spikes, mounds, and plenty of opportunity to find faces and animals in the walls.
The deeper we got, the harder it was for plant life to exist. It was also more difficult to take pictures because it was just too dark. Our guide shined her flashlight on some of the biggest crickets I've ever seen, and we could hear bats swooping around the ceiling.
