3 weeks on Christmas Day

Impossible
To love a body, heart, and mind so much.
Your statistics tell us you’re perfect. Just right.
Long fingers, long lashes, long life ahead of you.
4 days late, but many years too early.
You see, I wanted to finish fixing the world before you got here.
Economies, wars, inequities—I wanted to fix it all.
But now you’re here, all 8 pounds and 2 ounces of you.
We’ll need your 20 inches to grow
Strong and tall, and ready.
And we’ll need your help when 20 is your age,
When 8 days a week seem necessary,
2 years of college have led you to discover what’s important to you,
And December 4th is a reminder that life is as grand as we allow it to be.

You are just right, Alan Jeffrey. Just right.
Welcome to this family of love and care, warmth and support.
We have waited patiently for you
From the time you were an idea to the time we felt you kick.
Remember your family when you run out of options.
When you’re afraid, find comfort in safety.
When you’re lost, remember there’s adventure in the unknown.
When you’re lonely, tell yourself a favorite childhood story.
When you’ve given up, don’t.
When you get mean, take a deep breath.
Take advantage of your choices, and choose to live.
Demand that others have as much as you do.
Love love.
