Refranes en español

Part of my homework for the night was to ask my family about spanish sayings. They came up with some great stuff, much of which is very similar to those we have in english. Por ejemplo:

Al que madruga, Dios le ayuda. (God helps those who rise early.)

Caras vemos, corazónes no sabemos. (We see faces but don't know hearts.)

Más vale pájaro en mano que ciento volando. (A bird in hand is more valuable than 100 in flight.)

Preferible ser cabeza de ratón que cola de León. (It's better to be like a rat's head than a lion's tail... I don't quite understand this metaphor.)

Quien a buen árbol se arrima buena sombra le cobija. (Literally, if you get close to a good tree you'll have the shelter of a good shadow. Or, it's better to surround yourself with good examples for a positive influence.)

Mona vestida de seda, mona queda. (A monkey in a silk suit is still a monkey)

De tal palo tal astilla. (Literally, like trunk like splinter. Like father like son.)

No por mucho madrugar, amanece más temprano. (The earlier you get up, the earlier you go to bed. Lupe says this is used to convey that you won't necessarily be able to do more if you get up at 3am, because your day will still end after a certain amount of time.)

Agua que no haz de beber, déjale correr. (No idea... I got the feeling like she was trying to say, if you're not going to use it, give it somebody else.)

En boca del mentirosa, lo cierto se hace dudoso. (En the mouth of liars, the truth makes us doubtful. Never cry wolf.)

El que mucho abarca, poco aprieta. (S/he who covets much appreciates little.)

Dios tarda, pero no olvida. (God takes a long time, but doesn't forget.)

No dejes para mañana lo que puedes hacer hoy. (Don't leave 'til tomorrow what you can do today.)

It was fun trying to negotiate metaphors in another language!!
